Through class parent evenings and periodic parent education lectures or workshops, parents have an opportunity to look beneath the surface of their child’s daily experience in the classroom. We strongly encourage parents to attend these evenings, which very much contribute to our strong educational community and enhance the learning environment for the children. Please bring your curiosity, ask questions, and find out more about the reasons for those form drawings in first grade, the introduction of cello or violin in third grade, the Pentathlon in fifth grade, treadle sewing machines in 8th grade, and Projective Geometry in eleventh grade - and more!
During parent evenings, which may be monthly or bi-monthly, the teacher(s) will share a picture of the dynamics of the class and provide insights into the curriculum and how it relates to child development or the emergence of certain capacities. Many a parent has also found solace and support among other parents facing similar parenting concerns and age-related challenges. Your attendance at these evenings is vital to staying linked to other parents and to current issues in the classroom.
Parent education lectures or workshops usually involve an outside speaker who is an expert in his/her field. The focus may be on the young child, the grade school or the High School, or a particular subject, such as the teaching of math. These talks are designed to deepen your understanding of the Waldorf philosophy and give the “why” of our unique educational approach, whether you are new to Waldorf principles or a long-time participant in school life.
