SMWS Interscholastic Athletics Mission Statement of Philosophy—the SMWS Brand of Athletics

The Athletic Program is an integral component of the total SMWS educational program. At Shining Mountain, the movement curriculum recognizes that healthy physical activity lays the foundation for healthy brain and neural development; enhances physical, emotional, ethical, and spiritual aspects of the human being; and provides a vital pathway for self-exploration. We structure our program to strengthen different abilities at each stage of development and cooperative games in the early grades yield to competitive sports in middle and high school.

The program provides for the safety and well being of each individual participant. Athletes are supported to experience the sheer fun and enjoyment in their sport.

There are no “cuts” and all SMWS students are encouraged to participate regardless of experience or ability. Each athlete and coach shall be respected as a human being, challenged to be the best they can be, and inspired to be a contributing member to society.

The community, school personnel, coaches, and all athletes shall strive to be competitive, however SMWS Athletics does not support a “win at all costs” mentality. In other words, the short-term goal of winning shall never override the long-term participation objectives of guiding student athletes to develop physically, emotionally, and socially.

A healthy competitive attitude is a goal for each student. Knowledgeable coaches vigorously teach the fundamental skills and strategies of each sport.

It is our hope that athletics will be enjoyable, challenging, and rewarding.

Fostering a Healthy Attitude towards Competition

Participating in athletics and representing Shining Mountain on the court and in the field can serve as a rite of passage for SMWS adolescents. It is a privilege that is made available once the students reach the 7th grade. This privilege comes with the responsibility of representing Shining Mountain with honor and dignity. Student-athletes shall strive for virtue on and off the field of play. Accountability for ethical conduct can become a source of pride.

Principles of Positive Coaching

When the adults involved with youth sports understand and play their appropriate roles, it can be an enriching experience. Youth athletes—from middle school through high school—learn lessons that will last a lifetime. This is no easy task and requires the guidance of nurturing and skillful coaches. At the core of our coaching philosophy is the principle that every athlete deserves a Double-Goal Coach, one who strives to win while achieving the second, more important goal of using sports to help young people become better human beings by imbuing them with self respect and a respect for others. We believe our youth can learn how to deal effectively with adversity and meet challenges with perseverance.

PCA Seal of Commitment

To ensure that all SMWS Coaches are Double-Goal Coaches, the Athletic Department has made a commitment that has earned the school the Positive Coaching Alliance’s Seal of Commitment.

Positive Coaching Alliance awards this mark of distinction only to organizations whose policies demonstrate a commitment to a culture of Positive Coaching. Therefore, Shining Mountain requires that all of our coaches be certified as PCA Double-Goal Coaches, who strive both to win AND to teach athletes enduring life lessons.

All of our coaches will complete a comprehensive course in Positive Coaching principles to earn or renew their certification. This policy recognizes that certified Double-Goal Coaches are paramount to transforming the culture of youth sports and help ensure a quality experience for all youth athletes.

We are proud to have earned this important recognition of our commitment to excellence. By earning the Positive Coaching Alliance Seal of Commitment, we feel more confident than ever that our athletes—your children—will have a positive, fun, and rewarding experience.
