Student Support

At Shining Mountain we embrace the living, direct relationship between teacher and student as the optimum catalyst for successful learning. Our teachers model an extraordinary capacity for knowledge, creativity, and the sheer love of discovery. They motivate students toward academic success and a keen sense of wonder, purpose, and personal fulfillment.

Advisors
At the beginning of each school year, students in grades 10 - 12 pick a faculty member to serve as his/her advisor, and 9th graders are assigned an advisor with whom they meet daily. Each advisor, who monitors six to eight students, keeps track of the student’s academic progress and personal growth. The advisor is the contact person for the student’s parents and for other faculty.

Class Sponsors
Two faculty members follow a single class throughout their four-year journey at Shining Mountain Waldorf High School. The sponsors lead class trips, meet with parents at periodic parent evenings, guide community service projects, and generally oversee the social well-being of the class.

Support Team
The Support Team consists of High School faculty, in conjunction with regular support from outside educational and therapeutic consultants. The unique demands of the high school years may show up as academic, social, or emotional challenges for some students, and this group addresses these concerns. The Support Team also oversees the Advisor Program and recommends parent education topics.

College Counseling
A faculty member, who is a member of the National Association of College Admission and Counseling, serves as the High School’s college counselor. Beginning in tenth grade, students take the PSAT and PLAN tests in preparation for the SAT and ACT tests the following year and in senior year. In eleventh grade, a year-long course helps students identify post-high school interests and possible directions. At the time of college applications, students meet regularly one- on-one with the college counselor.
